A Golden evening by the sea | Beach Family Photography in Yorkshire
Some evenings seem to slow everything down.
The beach was almost empty, the tide gently rolling in and the evening sun sitting low over the beach huts, casting that soft golden light that makes everything feel a little quieter. There was a warm breeze drifting across the sand, and from the moment I met Jo, Jack and little Fern, it felt like one of those evenings where there was no where else anyone needed to be.
Before we wandered down to the shoreline, we'd chatted about the last eight months of family life. About the joy of watching Fern discover the world around her, their love of spending time outdoors together, and how this stage already felt like it was passing far too quickly.
At eight months old, Fern was described as sweet, friendly and inquisitive, but those three words barely scratched the surface. She absolutely radiated happiness. The kind of baby who smiles with her whole face, who finds joy in the simplest things, and whose excitement is impossible not to catch. I don't think I stopped smiling for the entire session.
They hoped I'd capture her smile above everything else, along with this wonderful stage where she's soaking up the world around her. Jo also shared something that felt particularly important to her. Breastfeeding had been quite a journey, and knowing that chapter was slowly coming to an end, she hoped we might quietly document it.
Watching Jo and Jack with her felt so easy. There was no second guessing, no trying too hard, just two parents completely wrapped up in this little girl they loved so much. You could feel how much they adored her in all the smallest ways. The smiles they exchanged when she laughed, the way they instinctively reached for her, the quiet conversations about the little things she'd started doing recently and how quickly she seemed to be changing.
By the end of the session, it barely felt like we'd been taking photographs at all. It felt like I'd been invited along on one of the little adventures they already love so much, and I think that's exactly why these images feel so honest. They aren't about creating a perfect evening. They're about remembering one that already was.
As with every family, we chatted about image preferences beforehand, and Jo and Jack chose not to share Fern's face online. So while you'll only see little glimpses of this beautiful evening, I'm so glad I can still tell a small part of their story here.
