The moments that make a family
Natural Family Photography in York & Yorkshire
Relaxed, natural and child-led family photography across Yorkshire including York, Leeds, Hull, Beverley, Selby and beyond. Sessions are relaxed and unposed, focusing on genuine connection, movement, and the in-between moments that often mean the most.
Family sessions for the wildly in love
At home or outdoors, wherever your family feels most alive (and ideally where nobody minds a bit of chaos unfolding).
You’re a family who finds beauty in the everyday - slow mornings that are never quite as slow as you planned, shared glances across a room when someone is definitely up to something, small hands reaching for yours while also trying to carry three unrelated objects at once.
You find joy in watching childhood unfold in all its unpredictability. The laughter, the curiosity, the sudden need to run in the opposite direction for absolutely no reason at all, the way your little one takes in the world with wide, wondering eyes and very strong opinions about what they’re doing next.
These are the moments you want to hold onto, the smile they give you when they look up, the way love moves quietly between you, the connection that binds you together, even when someone has just dropped a snack in the most dramatic way possible.
Moments where you were so present, so wrapped up in the here and now, that nothing else mattered (except maybe where that missing shoe has gone).
Family life moves fast. The mornings, the errands, the playground chaos, the constant motion of little hands and curious feet. It’s easy to miss the small details: the way a toddler tilts their head when they laugh, the way siblings lean on each other when no one is looking, the quiet exchange of glances between parents that says everything without words.
Those tiny, fleeting moments are often the ones that linger in memory, and sometimes, we only realise their weight once they’ve passed.
Telling your story
Imagine your family wandering through a sun-dappled forest, toes sinking into soft sand at the beach, or running barefoot through a meadow. These are the places where your story unfolds naturally, where laughter echoes, tiny hands reach, and fleeting glances speak volumes. These are the moments I capture, not posed, not forced, but entirely yours.
There’s no checklist. No staged smiles. Just gentle prompts, quiet observation, and space for life to happen. I follow your rhythm: the giggles, the hugs, the curious explorations, the little moments you might not even notice until you see them frozen in time.
Every image holds the light, the motion, the love, the feeling of that day. Your photos will not just show how your family looked, but how it felt to be together, fully present, fully alive.

“They will have pride of place on our wall”
“A few weeks ago we we had a family photo shoot with Heather. Before the shoot Heather was very helpful deciding on what colours/clothing would work best and how the shoot would work. On meeting Heather she was very easy to talk to and our 4 year old took to her straight away which made it so relaxed. Heather has taken so many lovely family and individual photos it was hard to make a decision. Thank you Heather they will have pride of place on our wall, we love them.”
In the middle of life, together
Families who book with me often see their session as a pause from the noise of everyday life. A chance to slow down, to come together, and to simply be away from the rush and expectations of modern life.
It becomes an hour of togetherness. Of fresh air and open space. A time where children are free to be children. To play, to laugh, to explore, to get muddy toes and splash through streams. To wrap their arms around siblings, around mama and papa, holding on tight with the kind of love that feels too big for their little bodies.
My role extends far beyond the moments we spend together with a camera. I understand how vulnerable it can feel to step in front of the lens, especially for mothers. So I create space for reassurance, support and care. From thoughtful wardrobe guidance, to gentle conversations before the session, to simply offering a place to voice any worries or nerves.
When it comes to the photographs themselves, my purpose is simple. To capture love in its truest form. To honour beauty, strength and connection. To help mothers see themselves as their children do. Powerful, cherished and deeply loved.

You really don’t need to worry about that. I don’t expect children to sit still, smile on cue, or behave perfectly. In fact, I prefer when they don’t. Some of the most beautiful images come from real, unfiltered moments, the movement, the energy, and the way they naturally are with you.
-
Yes, completely. Every child is different, and that’s exactly what makes your family yours. I don’t try to change that or force anything. I simply meet them where they are and gently go with their flow.
-
This is something I hear all the time, and it’s completely normal. Most families start this way. I’ll guide you gently throughout, but in a very natural way so it never feels like “posing.” Within a few minutes, most people forget the camera is even there.
-
Please don’t worry about that at all. Your home doesn’t need to look perfect or styled. I’m not photographing interiors, I’m photographing connection. The real, lived-in spaces are often the most meaningful because they’re yours.
Family Session FAQs
-
If the weather isn’t on our side, we can reschedule or adjust the plan. Sometimes cloudy or overcast days actually create the softest, most beautiful light for outdoor family photography.
-
Not at all. Most of the families I work with haven’t had professional photos in a long time, or at all. You don’t need experience or confidence in front of the camera, just a willingness to be together.
-
Only in the gentlest way. I might suggest small prompts to encourage connection, like walking together, cuddling, or playing, but nothing feels staged or forced. It’s about natural interaction, not performance.
-
Sessions usually last around 1 hour. This gives us plenty of space to slow down, settle in, and capture natural moments without feeling rushed.
“Heather went above and beyond for our photo shoot and to capture some incredibly treasured moments for us.
From scouting and picking a location to helping advise with styling and tips of what to wear on the day. We couldn't be happier with our photographs they are beautiful and really capture the essence of us as a family.
Heather is absolutely wonderful with the children and put them at ease straight away, and the shoot was so much fun! We played, we ran, we picked daisies and we walked along the shore.
Our photographs are natural, fun and full of laughter. Thank you so much! We can't thank you enough”
